It seems to be as straightforward as:
apt-get build-dep qemu
apt-get --compile source qemu

Plus (if you want to do things properly) filling-in the changelog and changing vde2 to vde2|vde in the dependencies (since vde2 isn't available in feisty). I don't have much time but I'll try to experiment a bit to check if other related packages also need to be recompiled.

To check a backport, it's better to use prevu than to compile directly.

OK. So I used prevu on source packages vd2, qemu & kqemu. Everything compiled correctly and I got the following results:

kqemu-common_1.3.0~pre11-5~7.04prevu1_all.deb
kqemu-source_1.3.0~pre11-5~7.04prevu1_all.deb
libvdeplug2_2.1.6+r154-1~7.04prevu1_i386.deb
libvdeplug2-dev_2.1.6+r154-1~7.04prevu1_i386.deb
qemu_0.9.0-2ubuntu1~7.04prevu1_i386.deb
vde_2.1.6+r154-1~7.04prevu1_all.deb
vde2_2.1.6+r154-1~7.04prevu1_i386.deb
vde2-cryptcab_2.1.6+r154-1~7.04prevu1_i386.deb

I'm starting to use it.

I also BP with success qemuctl and qemu-launcher. However qemuctl doesn't know about the qcow2 format and its VM saving capability. But from a strict BP point of view, both are OK.

Hi all,

Please be more precise in your backport requests and comments. We have to precise the complete version: actually we have in Gutsy archive qemu 0.9.0-2ubuntu1, can you confirm it works for you with this release? If so, please set status back to Confirmed. If no, please try with this version.
Thanks.

The source versions I used:

- kqemu-common_1.3.0~pre11-5
- qemu_0.9.0-2ubuntu1
- qemuctl_0.2-2
- qemu-launcher_1.7.4-1
- vde2_2.1.6+r154-1

And I think this BR should include *all* these packages, since they are tightly linked and worked perfectly together.

Each of those will need a separate bug then. Also, please include the exact version tested/requested so the archive admins will know exactly what you are asking for.

Confirmed that qemu_0.9.0-2ubuntu1 compiles and works fine on amd64

vde2_2.1.6+r154-1 and vde2-cryptcab_2.1.6+r154-1 seem to as well, although that they're not part of this bug.
