Bug Description

Test case:
Open music lens, double click a track
or
Open music lens, preview a track > click play

What's expected -
Rhythmbox should open & start playing the selected track

What happens -
Rhythmbox opens with no track playing, selected or queued

The same occurs with albums.

On the other hand if one r. clicked a track in nautilus > open in rhythmbox, Rb would open & start playing

So either you've got the wrong command for Rb via the Dash or it's not capable of working properly from the Dash, if the later than you should go back to Banshee as default supplied as it works fine from Dash/music lens

I think this bug is caused by a race condition...

I can confirm the behavior described by the bug submitter. When things are done in the order the bug submitter describes (see test cases above), there are two processes:

elparis 31327 0.0 0.0 17092 2296 ? Sl 18:21 0:00 rhythmbox-client --play-uri file:///home/elparis/Music/14%20Iron%20Maiden.mp3
elparis 31330 33.5 1.0 273840 40760 ? Sl 18:21 0:01 /usr/bin/rhythmbox

However, Rhythmbox is just sitting there doing nothing.

But, if Rhythmbox is started before using the Music lens, then things work properly. My guess is that rhythmbox-client runs before rhythmbox is ready so rhythmbox never receives the command to play the song.

I don't know who starts rhythmbox, rhythmbox-client or the Music lens, though.

Running rhythmbox-client --play-uri file://path/to/mp3 when no rhythmbox is running causes rhythmbox to be spawned so I guess rhythmbox-client is the one running rhythmbox. I would seem like this bug lives in rhythmbox-client because if it is spawning rhythmbox it should wait a little for rhythmbox to be read to accept commands.

This seems to be just another issue of bug 966132, I think
