Unity crashes when networking service is restarted.

When the command `sudo service networking restart` is executed in the terminal Unity (X? Compiz?) crashes and does not restart. The system is unusable and accepts no input to any applications. Ctrl - Alt - F1 and `sudo shutdown -r` is required.
