Full text search not working?

Bug Description
We currently have an isd-home-search object on arana in silva/newroot/isd. We have two documents in the Library. One is a powerpoint presentation (pps) and the other is a pdf. If I search for 'Monthly' (which appears in the body of the pdf) then the search fails to find anything at all!
I suspect I know why - the DL Search item only searches the plain text versions and neither document in the library has a plain text version available. Is this correct? Does the search item only work on the plain text versions?

I've now created a text version of the pdf. It now appears on the web page, but the search still fails to key on any of the words I know are in the document. I even deleted and created the search item again just in case, and it still fails to find any of the words inside the document. It only seems to be working on the title of the document, not the full text!
