Bug Description

There is an official-sounding PPA called chromium-daily,

* https://launchpad.net/~chromium-daily/+archive/ppa

However it only has version 18 released. This is ultimately confusing to end users. Suffice it to adduce two facts, Ubuntu 13.04 ships with version 25 (7 versions ahead of the chromium-daily ppa) and the timestamp of last maintenance in chromium-daily is 14 months old at the time of this bug report.

The inactive PPA should be shut down or maintained. It causes substantially more confusion than good. If no one wants to maintain it, shut it down pendining someone else picking up the job.

Also, all of these outdated PPAs are referenced by the Chromium project, https://launchpad.net/chromium-project

Hi, there has been some degrees of lack of progress on Chromium within ubuntu. The guy tasked with it has made some massive steps forward. I've taken the liberty to email him directly about this bug. If you do want a daily build, he is hosting them now on his own PPA before they rapidly get added into the 'stable' release area. https://launchpad.net/~cmiller/+archive/chromium-browser-stable-daily

Chad is a good guy, and was handed somewhat of a poisoned chalice. People do under-estimate the amount of work he has done and still is doing.

Yea, definitely not trying to detour good people from doing good work, but the current state is confusing to users and is likely to cause needless grief. Just remove the old packages from it and put a note in the repo that it is reserved for forward-compat. Even that is a *huge* step in the right direction.

I have no idea whose this is. I think Lanuchpad admins need a Question to kill it.

The distro security updates should have 28.0.1500.52 as of last week, so there is really no way that this PPA is doing anything except in people's heads.

Since it may not be obvious, the best way to get stable chromium-browser is to use the distro's default APT source, which should include the security feed. The only way a PPA will have something newer than that for more than a few days is if the PPA has a version that is broken.

Chad, do you plan to offer daily builds in the future?

You could just ask Chris to transfer ownership of https://launchpad.net/~chromium-daily to you and then you can remove old packages, post notices, or do uploads as you like.
