Bug Description

The pre-installed LibreOffice 3.6(?) of Ubuntu 12.04 has a bug and the paper tray selection does not work. It chooses always the paper from tray 1.

Therefore I installed LibreOffice 4.0 from ppa libreoffice-4-0. And this version worked correctly concerning the paper tray selection....

...until now - the current version 4.0.4.2 AGAIN BROKE this feature - again everything is printed from tray 1!

Do you know the last version of LibreOffice 4.0 which worked?

This seems to be a minor release regression in 4.0.4 vs. previous 4.0 versions:

@Björn: Shouldn't the version number of this bug be 4.0.4.2 release?

As I haven't ubuntu I can't confirm the bug itself.

So - the claim is that the change is in the 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 range ?

git log --numstat libreoffice-4.0.3.3..libreoffice-4.0.4.2

167 commits to bisect I guess - but I'd check that 4.0.3 actually does work ;-) Only one commit actually looks even remotely related to printing:

commit 0b39358aaf723b26b5effb7245f38ad960cc609a
Author: Jan Holesovsky <email address hidden>
Date: Wed Apr 24 16:15:19 2013 +0200

fdo#59259: Suppress the expensive parts when we are only writing to metafile.

So I'm suspicious of the claimed range personally.

don't forget to do a query on "paper" and "print" before starting ..

@Winfried: Whops indeed -- fixed.

@Michael: No, so far the claim is that it worked with _some_ 4.0.x version, so the range is 4.0.0 to 4.0.4. I asked to clarify on the downstream bug.

Note that given how much we use an external print stack on this, before its confirmed hard that going back to 4.0.0 fixes this, its entirely possible that some other package update broke this. Still -- if it would be us, its a minor release regression.

In addition to the question in comment #1: Did this really work with Ubuntu Raring as released (with LibreOffice 4.0.2) and does it stop working with the 4.0.4 update for raring from the ppa?

How did you select the paper trsy for your print jobs?

I tested now with up-to-date Saucy and the LibreOffice Writer which comes with it (4.0.2). I have entered some text and printed with LibreOffice's orioginal print dialog (not switched to GTK dialog). The tray I chose in the pop-up which comes up when clicking "Properties" in the print dialog. This way I printed several jobs from different trays and for me the jobs get sent with correct "InputSlot" attributes according to error_log on my print server. So LibreOffice seems to be OK.

@Björn: Unfortunately I don't know exactly. What I know is that 4.0.2 worked and the current 4.0.4 does not. If the regression appears from 4.0.2->4.0.3 or from 4.0.3->4.0.4 ... I don't know

@Till: I did the test in the same way. No outputs in the error.log (maybe due to LogLevel Warn)

@all: I have only Ubuntu 12.04 and Mac OS X 10.6 clients in the network. I manually updated a Mac OS X client from LO 4.0.2 to 4.0.4 - printing from tray 2 is still possible - so it doesn't seem a general problem of 4.0.4
Only to be on the safe side: I just printed something from gedit with the GTK print dialog on the latest Ubuntu 12.04 - no problem with tray 2 - so it is not a general problem of the latest ubuntu 12.04 (some CUPS patches were dropped in during the last weeks)
