No avatars, no images, no icons - birdie looks awful

Environment: Ubuntu 13.04, KDE 4.4.10

Birdie does not show any avatars, posted images and is painfully grey. I ran Birdie with the debug option and images are loaded, but not stored. This is some debug information:
