I got the debian source package on the rarewares site.
It compiled, installed fine, and works well on amd64 kubuntu Feisty.
I suggest anyone with ape files get the source from rarewares and convert their apes to flac. Ape appears to be dead on Linux for now.

mac-port has severe license problems.
I suggest ubuntu (and even medibuntu) should not distribute.

Supermmx modified the SDK available on the monkey audio home page to create mac-port.
The SDK has a funky license that does not appear to be GPL compatible.
Supermmx wanted to put his version on sourceforge so he told sourceforge it was under the LGPL. But the lgpl and the funky license appear to incompatible.

Sourceforge has dropped the project. No indication why but I would guess it's due to license problems.

Here are some discussions about the license problem:
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=21858&st=0

The funky custom license is here:
http://www.monkeysaudio.com/license.html

I think gentoo and debian have already decided not to distribute.

It would be really nice if Matthew T. Ashland decided to release his SDK under a widely accepted license. (Such as BSD?)
Matt if you read this please chose one from the top of http://www.opensource.org/licenses/category . But it's your code and if you want to invent your own funky license that we can't make sense out of then it's up to you.

I don't think anybody can safely distribute this code until the SDK is released under a less funky license. And mac-port might be dead no matter what happens.

Mike Sebastian

My 2-cent contribution.

After a long thought, I believe it shoud be included in multiverse, perhaps depending from a meta-package like "media-codec-ugly-multiverse", in a similar way as the "gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse" is done. We should consider that .ape format is quite popular, and supply the package as a migration tool to the flac format and clearly deprecate its usage as an audio compressor.

Of course, I feel uncomfortable with the custom so-called opensource licence, but it's up to the author to decide about it. As he never asked to remove or stop the mac-port project, I think he can bear with it, so I see no direct copyright infringiment.

Should distribution become more and more questionable on author's requests, we could always remove it even from the multiverse repository, which hosts software for which is user's responsibility to check whether he has the right to use the software or not.

Good news! GPL Monkey's Audio decoding is coming.

On Sep 13th an ape decoder was added to ffmpeg.
The latest release of mplayer has it as well.

Source code is here:
http://svn.mplayerhq.hu/ffmpeg/trunk/libavcodec/apedec.c

The mplayer/ffmpeg code was derived from libdemac.
There is also a command line program called demac.
Source for both is here:
http://svn.rockbox.org/viewvc.cgi/trunk/apps/codecs/demac/

See also :
http://codecs.multimedia.cx/?p=52
There is some indication that this does not work with mac files created by older versions of Monkey's Audio.

I have not tried compiling or using any of the above so I have no idea how well it works.

Gutsy and Hardy are both using 3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu4 package of ffmpeg.
Hopefully Hardy will move to something from after Sep13th?

Cheers,
Mike
