Bug Description

I have Ubuntu Feisty/Gnome Desktop installed on two systems..both behave the same. Insert CD/DVD into drive, right click icon, choose 'copy cd'. Make location choices (tried all). When Nautilus gets to the 'create disc image' progress bar window, it hangs for a very short time and then just closes. No dump file, no other action. Nautilus stays running. I can copy CD/DVD using K3b, and probably other apps.

Confirmed using 2 different computers (with different cd drives) and 2 different data cd's.
The problem is obtaining an iso image from a cd . (Once an iso image exists, burning it into a blank cd is not a problem).

Running feisty.
Kernel version: 2.6.20-16-generic
nautilus-cd-burner version: 2-18-1-0ubuntu1

An empty image is created: (e.g. /tmp/image.iso.LTDDTT)

a line that seems relevant from .xsession-errors
** (nautilus-cd-burner:28156): WARNING **: Unable to prepare tracks for burning

I am happy to provide more information.

Hi Jorge,

Your confirmation is right on...This seems to be a 'new' problem, I
believe Nautilus was part of a recent update. I installed feisty 1 week
before release and I have not noticed this until today. If you can help
direct me towards fixing this problem, I would be grateful. I have not
had a lot of time today to mess with this, but I will have all night. :)
I tried the same as you, two different computers, cd drive, and discs as
well. Same thing. I also confirm that burning is not a problem, as you
said, the problem is obtaining the iso.

> ** (nautilus-cd-burner:6123): WARNING **: Unable to prepare tracks for burning

is also in my .xsession-errors...

Hi Jorge,

Update...I installed the latest Ubuntu update this afternoon and the
problem seemed to go away...? There was a kernel image in there, but I
don't think it was in the kernel. Don't know now, but it seems to be a
non-issue. Thanks for your response.

Hello.

I've just run into this bug in Feisty, with kernel 2.6.20-16-generic, and all the latest updates, as of 7-25-07. Here is the error I get when running nautilus-cd-burner in a terminal:

dane@Fileserver1:~$ nautilus-cd-burner --source-device=/dev/hdb

** (nautilus-cd-burner:6209): WARNING **: Unable to prepare tracks for burning

I am trying to copy a GParted Live CD from /dev/hdb (DVD+/-RW) onto a blank CD in the same drive. I have verified that /dev/hdb is the right drive:

dane@Fileserver1:~$ mount
/dev/hda2 on / type ext3 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
/sys on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)
varrun on /var/run type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,mode=0755)
varlock on /var/lock type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,mode=1777)
procbususb on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)
udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw,mode=0755)
devshm on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
lrm on /lib/modules/2.6.20-16-generic/volatile type tmpfs (rw)
/dev/hda4 on /media/data type ext2 (rw,sync,grpid)
/dev/disk/by-uuid/DE1CB23F1CB2128F on /media/winxp type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,allow_other,default_permissions,blksize=4096)
/dev/sda1 on /media/backup type ext2 (rw,sync,grpid)
binfmt_misc on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw)
/dev/hdb on /media/cdrom0 type iso9660 (ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev)

I'll try reinstalling nautilus-cd-burner and let you know how it goes.

I just reinstalled nautilus-cd-burner using synaptic, and the bug persists with the same error as above. Please let me know if you need more information.

I can confirm that something is wrong...

so far today, I tried to write a cd ISO to a blank cd in the burner, and it display the "Please put a disc, with at least xxx.x KiB free, into the drive. The following disc types are supported:" message. Also if I try to copy a cd from one drive to another I get the same and also if I insert a blank cd and try to write from the 'cd' folder by choosing 'write to disc'. If this is in fact a bug, then it is not the one that I posted early last month, and probably should be moved to a new thread. The bug that was originally posted here was a problem with Nautilus, Nautilus would not create the image before burning. My work around last month was to use K3b, and that is what worked today.
