front camera stretches and fattens images

On nexus4, taking a video or picture with the camera that points back toward me elongates the image, such that if I have it held normally, with the usb plug pointed down, my face looks very wide. Then turning it sideways, my face looks very narrow and goes off the screen. After taking a picture, it sometimes seems to clear up.

It seems to look normal in the preview until I actually hit the record button.

To reproduce:
1. Open camera app
2. click the icon to switch cameras so that it's pointed at you
3. click the icon to record video
4. click the button to start recording

At this point the image seemed to get a little darker, and fatter.
