Bug Description

I can find my network printer, but I can't access it. See attached file for "hp-check -t". The first sign of problem in the report is:

hp-check[9368]: info: :---------------------------------
hp-check[9368]: info: :| INSTALLED CUPS PRINTER QUEUES |
hp-check[9368]: info: :---------------------------------

hp-check[9368]: info: :Type: Printer
hp-check[9368]: info: :Device URI: hp:/net/Photosmart_B110_series?zc=HP7ED046
hp-check[9368]: info: :PPD: /etc/cups/ppd/Photosmart_B110.ppd
hp-check[9368]: info: :PPD Description: HP Photosmart b110 Series, hpcups 3.13.3
hp-check[9368]: info: :Printer status: printer Photosmart_B110 is idle. enabled since tor 16 maj 2013 07:03:33
error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hp:/net/Photosmart_B110_series?zc=HP7ED046
error: unable to open channel
error: Communication status: Failed

When I open the "HP Device manager", and click on the Status tab for the printer, there is a line that says:
"Device communication error", Code 2012, Please correct the problem and try again.

I have triple boot on my computer. Linux Mint 15 and Ubuntu 13.04 fails with the same problem. However, Windows 8 works fine.

Running 'hp-doctor' says:
error: 'Photosmart_B110' Printer is either Powered-OFF or Failed to communicate.
The printer is powered on, I can print on it from another mobile PC with Windows 8, so it looks like the communication is the problem.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting the issue in HPLIP. To help us understand and analyze the issue please follow below steps.

=> Reconfigure print queue with the commands in the terminal mentioned below.
=> system-config-printer (remove all print queues)
=> hp-setup -g <IP Address of the printer> (It should not be run in a root mode. This command is adding print queue, make sure you select ppd name having "-ps" or "hpcups" substring)
            e.g $hp-setup -g 192.168.3.45
=>Try printing now.

If problem does not get solved then please send the output of hp-setup -g <IP Address> command.

I can get it working if I do "sudo gedit /etc/cups/printers.conf" and then change the URI from "sz=HP7ED046" into "ip=192.168.0.100", and then "sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart"

So the bug is in setting up the printer.

I have the same problem with Ubuntu now, including Lucid (using *current* hplips) and Linux Mint 15 (stock hplips). One of my printers works fine, the other fails in exactly the manner described in this bug report.

I have spent days trying to figure out why I could only print with a USB cable to my HP 3520 printer. I deleted the printer after set up, entered the command hp-setup -i <ip address>, and it did the trick for me. Tanks for the tip!

As for me, I am trying to install a brand-new HP DeskJet 4100. I also get the Unable to communicatie with device (code=5012). It is connected via USB. I have Ubuntu 20.04, so the System settings is a little different. Under Add Printers, I can see my printer (in fact, it has three or four entries, but only one shows the Printing Options information).

When I select Print Test Page, it goes through the motions, notifying me that it has started the print job. I can feel the machine vibrating as the heads move back and forth. Then it tells me the job is completed successfully, however, no paper has come through the machine. This is a printer I have removed from the box and put the ink in and connected.

I have read to set the ip address. But, I have no idea what that info should be. This is the current Devide URI: http://DeskJet Plus 4100 series [CN04E2V4C9]._ipp._tcp.local:631. My CUPS server is the localhost.

I have tried all of the solutions to no avail. Thanks for you help!

The Device ID I posted previously was from the System settings.

Here is the Devide URI from the Printer Properties: hp:/usb/DeskJet_Plus_4100_series?serial=CN04E2V4C9
