Laptop won't turn on again after closing lid and trying to get out of sleep mode/hibernation.

If I close my laptop lid so that I can move to another room or commute, and then open the lid and try to get the system to respond, nothing will happen. I have to shut down the machine and turn it on again. I've tinkered with the settings and I dunno what else is the issue.
