Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

Pidgin lets me edit the alias of connections available via Bonjour, but these aliases do not persist across sessions even if
the username and machine identifier remain the same. Notes are also lost.

Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia
Package: pidgin 1:2.5.5-1ubuntu8.1
PackageArchitecture: amd64
ProcEnviron:
 SHELL=/bin/bash
 LANG=de_DE.UTF-8
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-11-generic x86_64
UserGroups: adm admin cdrom dialout lpadmin plugdev sambashare vboxusers

ProblemType: Bug

Date: Wed Jun 6 20:15:48 2007
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 7.10
ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/pidgin
Package: pidgin 1:2.0.0+dfsg.1-3ubuntu2
PackageArchitecture: i386
ProcCmdline: pidgin
ProcCwd: /home/lee
ProcEnviron:

 PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games

 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: pidgin
Uname: Linux zoidberg 2.6.22-6-generic #1 SMP Fri Jun 1 19:24:12 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Steps to reproduce:

 - open up Buddy List
 - select user in Bonjour group
 - edit alias
 - alias is changed
 - quit pidgin
 - restart
 - open up Buddy List
 - user in Bonjour group reverted back to original alias

Still persists in Jaunty.

Obviously it's not still an issue for *me* - if I know that a specific software feature is broken I don't use it.

I've confirmed it as still "broken", in that it does not perform as I would expect:

 - find a bonjour listed contact "<email address hidden>"
 - edit the alias to be "Joe Example"
 - contact now displayed as "Joe Example"
 - stop/start pigdin
 - contact now displayed as "<email address hidden>"

Notes are no longer available for Bonjour contacts, therefore I've amended the title.

Ok - I have the same problem here. Using pidgin on windows for intranet chat with mac users. When I change aliases, pidgin forgets them after restart. Not a big problem but a little annoying though. ;)

What exactly you need to know? I'll be happy to help :)

A workaround is to move the contact into another group (i.e. out of “Bonjour”). Aliases will be kept then. I have not tried notes, though.

Can you run
apport-collect 119000
and let it add all relevant information for the Jaunty version of the problem. Thanks.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu version (10.10). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
