In the "bin" where all the clips are, most of the thumbails aren't showing. After restarting, the problem remained, which makes me think dmedia didn't get thumnails for them.

Thanks for the bug report!
The current Dmedia thumbnailer is kinda proof of concept and isn't very reliable.
But the bigger issue is currently when the thumbnailer fails, Dmedia doesn't retry in the future. For example, if a specific version of Dmedia can't thumbnail some type of file, hopefully this is something we'll fix in a later release. When said fix is available, we want Dmedia to again attempt to thumbnail the files it failed to previously.
Would that address your problem well?
Oh, I re-targeted this bug at Dmedia rather than Novacut.
