It might be easier to style the chat properly if a webview is used

So I assume we would create html output and themes/styles would be provided as css files? Sounds good.

Maybe the postler theme (i think it's used in empathy) could be used for the chat conversation.

With CSS support themability would become a no brainer. It would also allow for inline image displaying and other crap that modern IRC clients have. (Not that I neccessarily agree with those)
