Bug Description

This device uses an rtl8192cu Realtek driver.

Authentication fails with a WPA2 router, with:
# wlan1: authenticate with .:.:.:.:..
# wlan1: direct probe to ... (try 1/3)
# wlan1: direct probe to ... (try 2/3)
# wlan1: direct probe to ... (try 3/3)
# authentication with ... timed out.

And this goes on and on. No other messages, just this one. Twice, every time I try to connect with it.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1186253/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.10 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the many logs, I ran apport as requested.
(For some weird reason I didn't have python-apport/launchpad installed. I used the proper 13.04 amd64 image, that I even double checked).

Anyway, installing the kernel, and let's see if something happens. :)

It's the same issue. Timeout.

I use an openwrt (latest stable) on my router.
So I could even use that to find out the exact problem/find a fix.

What command should I run or which log should I attach?
(It's a TP-Link 1043ND)

It's the same message, nothing changes. (Thought the "authentication" got something to do with the password... but nope.)

Nope. Does not work. I'll attach my new lsusb and dmesg.
I'm running the new proposed kernel. Larry sent me this fix weeks ago, and it only inits the device.

Like the LED shows up and you can see it in NetworkManager.
But you still cannot connect, as the authentication will time out.

Thanks for your effort, I hope this bug will get fixed one day.

Shiki, as per http://download.lenovo.com/express/ddfm.html an update is available for your BIOS (3.23). "End of my story? Larry never found the time to investigate the issue. I returned the item as it dropped connection sometimes on Windows as well. They just refunded it and that's it. So yeah. This is a terrible chip, no one should buy a device equipped with such."

Of course the bug is a bug, so if anyone is willing to help investigate matters further, feel free.
I didn't ask for a refund, they just did, without any notice. Not like I mind.
(Time for a "free" N wifi. Which I bet will be this bad, too. hah.)
