According to bug #974480, java applications are whitelisted; if they have a system tray icon, should appear in the notification area. This is not happening for DavMail. To reproduce, install and run DavMail as documented at http://davmail.sourceforge.net/linuxsetup.html . I verified that DavMail is running but no icon appears.

As described in http:// www.webupd8. org/2015/ 05/on-demand- system- tray-for- ubuntu. html you can simply install `Indicator Systemtray Unity`, a new AppIndicator which adds a system tray to the Unity panel.
