Bug Description

I'm using Ubuntu Feisty in zh_CN locale. The Gnome panel clock does provide an option to change the clock type between 12/24-hour, but it's not functioning. For example, assumed that it's now 11:45 pm, and I choose 12-hour as the clock type in Preferences of the panel clock. The time is still represented as 23:45. Restarting X doesn't help.

I had a look at /usr/share/i18n/locales/zh_CN, and saw a line like this:

am_pm "<U4E0A><U5348>";"<U4E0B><U5348>"

And they're the exact words of am/pm in Chinese.

For nearly two weeks, this bug isn't reviewed by any moderators. I think neither will this be fixed soon by Ubuntu people, nor will anybody submit a patch. For Chinese users, I highly recommend Lunar Applet 1.5 as a replacement. It provides a clock of 12-hour type, a lunar calender and a similar look to Gnome panel clock. However, it lacks Evolution support.

In order to install Lunar Applet 1.5, you have to add an extra source (via System -> Administration -> Software Sources):

deb http://ubuntu.cn99.com/ubuntu-cn/ feisty main restricted universe multiverse

After that, use Synaptic to search and install "lunar-applet", then add it to the panel (and remove the Gnome panel clock). Remember to disable the source above after installation, because there are several unsigned packages which you probably don't want.

Thanks for your bug report, Rockallite. I can't find any option to choose between 12 or 24 hour display on the preferences window for Gnome Panel's clock. Might this option have been removed since you reported this?

Regarding to your last message, I just want to remember that bugs are mostly reviewed and fixed by volunteers in their free time, and there are way more reports than we can handle, so quite a bit patience can be required until someone looks at your bug. If you would like to help out with bugs, have a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HelpingWithBugs.

Thanks again!

OK, that bug has been fixed in Ubuntu Gutsy. Many thanks, guys!

Firstly, I must mention that the option to choose between 12/24 hour of Gnome Panel's clock may be available only to some locale, for example, zh-CN.

Secondly, I was not complaining, though it seemed to be. I do understand the spirit of free software, and I submit patches for several open-source project written in Python. I'm happy to patch a program or fix a bug, if I have the ability. But I'm not actually a programmer, just an experienced user which is lack of many capabilities, including C/C++ programming skills, therefore I make suggestions and submit tickets of bugs in other time. And I do understand that "sit and wait" is not the right answer to a problem without comprehensive attention. (It spent half a year to finally fix the bug, didn't it?) So I provided a hacky yet feasible solution to the problem. That's it. Thank you.
