Bug Description

elementary should have a really good book reader. Evince is not bad but the UI is really ugly.
Evince or ePDFView could be used as a backend and an elementary UI could be created on top of it.
Furthermore adding a book store would be awesome.

A Calibre Fork or a new app using Calibre's API may be the answer since Calibre has a good API so it can be used in other apps. Problem is, Calibre is written in Python. I thought for about writting a cover-view UI plugin for Calibre, but an Elementary Ebook and PDF App would be really nice.

I agree with this, as I have not been able to read .epub files in evince. I didn't realize evince didn't have this functionality.

Hmm, Calibre might have a good API but like you said it's written in Python.
Yes, Evince currently doesn't have this functionality but it seems to be on their plans though.

IMO book stores (and in-app purchasing) are lame and bloat, over complicate applications, and make for a security headache.

not to mention that for the good of the FLOSS ecosystem people should be going for drm free files and formats anyway.

I agree that the Books application for reading .epub (and possibly .mobi) files could be a very useful addition to the elementary OS, but I have to also agree that having a separate book store could be too complicated to implement and manage properly.
