Bug Description

I encountered this problem in Ubuntu 11.04, 11.10, 12.04 and now 13.04. I never encountered it with 12.10 but it reappeared in 13.04. The mouse will randomly freeze and the only solution is to reboot. Usually I can open a terminal window (Ctrl-Alt-T) to try and gather information but occassionally I will encounter a complete system freeze. My Xorg log records no events and dmesg only shows a single change from boot (usb 2-1: USB disconnect, device number 2). I've attached:
system and version details
Xorg.o.log at boot and as there's no difference at error I haven't attached the diff files.
Dmesg at boot and after error and the diff output. The USB disconnect message appears after some seconds rather than immediately (perhaps some timeout event).
lsusb output
lspci output
uname output

I tried removing VirtualBox but this did not change anything.

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

Hi, I'm still encountering this problem and it's more than just the mouse freezing. There is lots of unusual beahviour affecting my usb devices. The mouse misbehaving is usually the first symptom. Most times I have to reboot. It has made my Compaq desktop almost useless on some days. I've resorted to adding a second mouse to "take over" but that just delays the inevitable reboot.

Is it possible for me to wind back the usb drivers to 11.10 as that's the only Ubuntu release in the last few years that hasn't caused the problem. I'd be tempted to buy a new PC but am reluctant as I'm not sure I wouldn't encounter the same problem

Sadly, yes, although a lot less frequently. Without wanting to "put the
mockers on" it's only happened twice in the last week.

FYI, uname -a gives:

Linux barbangus-desktop 3.11.0-13-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 23
07:38:26 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Christopher

Hope you've enjoyed/are enjoying your festive season.

I installed an upstream version on December 24 and was about to smile
that the bug has been fixed (and update the bug as per your below).
Unfortunately, this morning my mouse froze again. I'm hoping I've
installed a correct copy. In response to 'uname -a' I receive:

Linux barbangus-desktop 3.13.0-031300rc5-generic #201312221635 SMP Sun
Dec 22 21:37:23 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

However, something to note. When installed this I encountered exactly
the problem described in your link below regarding VirtualBox
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds?action=show&redirect=KernelMainlineBuilds#Problems_installing_an_upstream_kernel).
At the time I chose to ignore the issue as I don't use VBox often.
However, yesterday I needed it and reinstalled VBox. And this morning I
encountered the problem. So it is possible that the mouse freeze is
introduced with VBox (I'm not techo enough to know whether this is
possible). I'm happy to remove VBox and run my test for a further few
weeks if you wish.

At this stage I haven't added any comments to the bug but can easily do
so if you wish.

Further, there's a comment in your text re "needs-crash-log". Not sure
how I go about getting one of those as there is no crash per se.

Happy to do as directed.

Kind regards

I hope I've done this and will continue to test.

I installed
linux-image-3.5.0-45-generic_3.5.0-45.68_amd64 which I believe is the last kernel for Quantal.

uname -a gives
    Linux barbangus-desktop 3.8.0-31-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Tue Sep 10 20:03:44 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

During the installation I "broke" Grub (now recovered) but during the process noticed in the log messages showing on my terminal that the usb mouse continually disconnects and reconnects about every 60 seconds. Unfortunately, I don't have an exact log but it's something like:

    [ 4.166548] usb 2-4: new low-speed USB device number 5 using ohci-pci
    [ 4.378520] usb 2-4: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=c06a
    [ 4.378523] usb 2-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
[ 4.378525] usb 2-4: Product: USB Optical Mouse
    [ 4.378526] usb 2-4: Manufacturer: Logitech
    [ 64.??????] usb 2-4: USB disconnect, device number 5
    [ 64.??????] usb 2-4: new low-speed USB device number 6 using ohci-pci
    [ 64.??????] usb 2-4: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=c06a
    [ 64.??????] usb 2-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
[ 64.??????] usb 2-4: Product: USB Optical Mouse
    [ 64.??????] usb 2-4: Manufacturer: Logitech
    [ 127.??????] usb 2-4: USB disconnect, device number 6

Not sure if this is helpful or not.

Kind regards

(Still not sure of the build date - I'm guessing 2 Dec 2013 - but we'll see how it goes.

Already encountered the problem on build 3.5.0-45. So, I've now installed build 3.5.0-26 and will see if the problem was there "back then". This was built just prior to the release of Quantal. uname -a gives:

My next tack is to try an earlier Quantal version - based on the bisection idea.
However, I have a niggling question. You said "Would you mind testing a Quantal kernel in Trusty ...". How exactly? I'm guessing my base version is Saucy (Ubuntu 13.10)

The problem hasn't disappeared but it seems rather too hard to find what you need to solve the problem. So I'm happy to let it go. I'll suffer until I buy a new desktop sometime.

I don't know why, but I wonder if it might be a power issue.

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

With the recent release of this Ubuntu release, would like to confirm if this bug is still present. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

You can update to the latest development kernel by simply running the following commands in a terminal window:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

If you want this bot to quit automatically requesting kernel tests, add a tag named: bot-stop-nagging.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.
