After upgrading my kernel (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1198210), i see now that the text which briefly flashes across the screen during the 'crash' after attempting to login is:

I have experienced this bug on.

Ubuntu 3.13.0-40.69-generic 3.13.11.10

I have just switched to the nVidia Proprietary driver as it's happened about four times.
I've attached an exceprt of my /var/log/syslog from when it happened.

Ian Ohr, thank you for your comment. So your hardware and problem may be tracked, could you please file a new report with Ubuntu by executing the following in a terminal while booted into the default Ubuntu kernel (not a mainline one) via:
ubuntu-bug linux
