Cannot print at all with USB to parallel adapter and HP 4L

Bug Description

Since upgrading to raring I am unable to print anything at all using Prolific 2303 USB to parallel adapter and a HP LaserJet 4L. cups error log attached. This is the output when adding the printer and trying to print a test page.

Your cups error_log has no info in it, please provide a cups error log as described here:
Also have a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems#USB_-.3E_Parallel_adapter and provide the info from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems#USB_printer
Ubuntu 13.04 is no longer supported so please upgrade to 14.04.1 LTS or higher. You can test without installing by using the ubuntu-desktop live-cd.

Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with cups and printing. You made this bug report some time ago and Ubuntu has been updated since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug?
If you are, could you let us know, and in the current version, run the following (only once):
apport-collect BUGNUMBER
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
