Wishlist: save arbitrary data persistently in the DB via controller scripts

Bug Description

It would be useful for controller scripts to be able to save arbitrary data in the database for later retrieval. For one thing, it would allow implementation of this:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1181215

...but it would also allow persistent saving of controller script settings (eg: adjustable scratching parameters, saving loop in and out points, etc.)

What I'm thinking is: add a USERDATA table to the database. add script accessible functions engine.setData("key", "value"), and engine.getData("key") to save and retrieve persistent database data. Seems this would open up a lot of controller script options.
