Bug Description
I'm using several different phones with different plans to connect to the internet, so this problem is particularly prominent to me.
Once a new modem has been set up, it shows like this:
modem name
status (connected/
___________
network name
If the modem is not connected to the computer it still shows the four lines only with name and status greyed out. In my opinion non-connected devices should not be shown entirely, their respective network hidden. There is no possible interaction at all and doesn't give network information.

Thank you for the report.
This bug belongs to the network indicator, which is a separate project. Unfortunately there's nothing we can do from Wingpanel in regard to this.
