This seems to be the same bug I am reporting. I get:

(thunderbird:5620): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_variant_new_string: assertion `string != NULL' failed

The above bug report from me was using Saucy 13.10 testing 32 bit. I have just copied the entire .thunderbird directory to my 13.04 Raring 32 bit installation and taken all available updates including thunderbird. The bug does not show in this version which is on the same computer as the above report.

Indeed, I get the same errors. It is a bug with Thunderbird in 13.10 specifically.
