Bug Description

I've upgraded my system from Feisty to Gutsy and installed GNOME at the same time. Gnome session started, but with an error about gnome-settings-daemon crashing.
I started that daemon manually from a terminal application, but on next login the same error occured. It said it can't connect to a dbus socket (in /tmp/...).

As it turned out today, the problem was fixed by installing dbus-x11. But gnome-session does not depend on this package - WHY?

Solution: add a dependency on dbus-x11 to gnome-session

Thank you for your bug. The Depends would be wrong, gnome-session starts dbus

I have the same problem running kubuntu gutsy, and with ubuntu-desktop installed. I get always the error:

Failed to open connection to session message bus: Failed to execute dbus-launch to autolaunch D-Bus session

running gnome applications from kde.

Installing dbus-x11 fix that.

I too see this bug, on upgrading to hardy on my rather minimal (non-GNOME) system on which I still run gnome-settings-daemon in order that my settings will be applied to GTK apps.

$ gnome-settings-daemon

** (gnome-settings-daemon:14491): WARNING **: Couldn't connect to session bus: Failed to execute dbus-launch to autolaunch D-Bus session

** (gnome-settings-daemon:14491): WARNING **: Could not get a connection to the bus

Installing dbus-x11 fixed the problem for me too. I believe the missing dependency is in gnome-settings-daemon, not gnome-session.

I had this same problem, when running Audacious from a base Kubuntu Hardy installation. It would complain about not being to connect to the bus, which is required to prevent multiple instances of Audacious from opening.
Thank you for the suggestion of installing dbus-x11, it works with that package installed.

the hardy gnome-session version doesn't use dbus to start gnome-settings-daemon, closing the request
