Bug Description

Update: It seems like this happens only when multiple users are logged in, and the problem stil exists in the 3.9.0 Mainline kernel.

When trying to power off or reboot the system, I get this output from the terminal (reconstructed from memory):
* Asking all remaining services to terminate... [OK]
* Kiling all remaining processes... [FAIL]
* Switching to single-user mode...

It then drops to a root shell. When I try to reboot or shutdown from there, I get the same error. I have to do a hard shutdown and then power the computer on again. Sometimes it fails to boot without any output (it gets stuck on a blinking underscore in the upper left corner.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR
When attempting to reboot or shut down with multiple users logged in, I would expect a warning about their programs being closed. After accepting, all users should be logged out and the computer halted.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Is it safe for me to reboot now, or did something go seriously wrong? It seems like the Broadcom driver caused some trouble.

make.log attached.

Disabling the proprietary Broadcom driver made the installation succeed. Going down for a reboot now.

The computer restarts just fine now, however, wireless networking stopped working. I had to snatch a cable to get online. If I can`t find a fix for this quite soon, I suppose I`ll revert back quite soon.

Should this be filed as a seperate bug report? And if so, should I file it against the kernel or the driver?

Other than that, everything seems to work just fine.

It seems the problem still persists in the Mainline kernels, but only occurs when multiple users are logged in. I updated the tags and bug description accordingly.

Sorry for some misinformation. It seems to happen randomly independent of the number of users logged in (even when lightdm is stopped, and no user has been loggen in graphically).

Joakim Langvand, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please just make a comment to this.
