Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase

Sometimes it is impossible to empty the trashcan.
I am not sure what causes this.
I will attach a screenshot on which the trashcan is non-empty. It should be possible to empty it, but for some reason the "Empty Trash Bin" is disabled.

I just noticed that when I can't empty the Trash Bin, I can suspend my laptop, and then I *can* empty the Trash Bin when recovered from suspend.
Any idea why?

Similar to your symptoms, the "Empty trashcan" menu entry on the trashcan is disabled although the icon shows the trashcan is not empty when there are only files from hidden directories in it - I have not checked but expect the same behaviour for hidden files (by hidden I mean that the path to the deleted file contains at least one directory whose name starts with a dot or the name of the file itself starts with a dot). Curiously, and I assume you experience the same behaviour, the trashcan icon changes from "empty" to non-"empty". I have experienced this on and off for quite a while now (possibly back in feisty already - I can't remember) not run any further tests but it seems that as soon as a non-hidden file goes in the trashcan, I can actually empty it again.

I have not tried suspending my machine but rebooting it does not enable emptying the trashcan.

Consequently, I think that the trashcan application uses a methods to a) determine whether there are files in it that is different from b) that enables the "Empty trashcan" feature in the trashcan menu.

Hope this helps.

I have also experienced this. If I click "Open in new window" I am able to delete the files in there.

Just upgraded to Hardy and I can't open the waste bin inKubuntu.I get error message "maformed URL"I reinstalled kicker and applets several times and rebooted each time, also got updates in terminal for kicker and applets-no luck. Also have trouble with trash in gnome where I can open it,but when I delete it's all or nothing, and when I close it the tooltip is stuck on 6 items.Didn't have that problem with GutsyI understand this is alpha and expected problems, but was sort of surprised about the trash problems.

I can´t seem to find some pattern here unfortunately.
It does not seem to happen for specific filetypes or filenames here.
Does it for the others?

@Elmer: Your problem is most likely not related to this. I think the bug you are experiencing was fixed.
