Bug Description

After the upgrade to 13.04 it worked fine. But after some restarts unity is not shown. Logon works perfect, but changing to unity workplace give a white flash and a dark screen.

I dit use the recovery boot options, reinstalled ati en radeon and it worked again. On the next reboot again a black sreen.

Installed a vesa driver in xorg.conf>
Section "Device"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
 Identifier "Configured Monitor"
 HorizSync 30.0-62.0
 VertRefresh 50.0-70.0
EndSection

Section "Screen"
 Identifier "Default Screen"
 Monitor "Configured Monitor"

        Depth 24
        Modes "1366x768" "1024x768" "800x600"
       EndSubsection
EndSection

No luck. Problems remains. So no flrx, no radeon, no vesa drivers that work for this mobilty 4250 chipset.

Systeem works in recovery mode, chossing resume, but gives a wrong screensize and distored fonts.

Solution: Remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Problem cause: Upgrading from older Ubuntu versions leaves the fglrx driver installed in xorg.conf.
In ubuntu 13.04 this gives problems. Do not know why and how.

Installing the vesa driver is not a solution.

Tip for the developers: Remove xorg.conf during installation if fglrx fails to load.

Bug can be closed.

This bug happened again without a xorg.conf file.

And on a second thinkpad with an intel driver it happened as well. No xorg.file present.

On both machines starting is sometimes fine and sometimes hangs.

And a third machine with the closed Nvidea driver I see no problems.

So, it is related to open source drivers one way or another and is not driver specific.

It looks like this. After:
sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/lock
the machine will reboot fine the next time.

But, the second reboot gives a black screen.
Remove the lock and reboot again. The screen comes up fine.

Does this make sense?

Lock has nothing to do with it.
