Bug Description

Not sure how to file this: it's for the do-release-upgrade process for kubuntu from 12.10 to 13.04.

After upgrading the login manager came up fine. When logging in there was a message about qdbus from startkde:

if qdbus >/dev/null 2>/dev/null; then
    : # ok
else
echo 'startkde: Could not start D-Bus. Can you call qdbus?' 1>&2
    test -n "$ksplash_pid" && kill "$ksplash_pid" 2>/dev/null
xmessage -geometry 500x100 "Could not start D-Bus. Can you call qdbus?"
    exit 1
fi

The xmessage one. invoking qdbus by hand on a text console gave a message I can't remember. Strace seemed to show that it was looking for something it did not find. This led me to look at qtchooser which also did not work. "qtchooser -list-versions" listed nothing.

I tried to use apt-file to find the directories it looked in (found by strace). Then I tried to install qt5-default. Then the message changed to qdbus binary missing from some library directory specific to qt5.

When i installed qt4-default and reinstalled qdbus it was possible to log in.

Kind of high threshold to get the upgraded machine to work.

Now upgrading a kubuntu VM with much fewer packages installed, I'll post here what I learn.

found solution for me (and some others), as I have a 64bit system; Kubuntu Forums:

After upgrading to 13.04 trying to log into KDE pops up an error message appeared "Could not start d-bus. Can you Call qdbus?

Running qdbus pops up the error:

qdbus: could not exec '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt4/bin/qdbus': No such file or directory

The reason was that qdbus:i386 was installed instead of qdbus:amd64 (my system is 64bit). Running

"apt-get install qdbus:amd64" fixed the issue.

My update log also shows that qdbus:i386 was installed - on my amd64 system. Fixing that might have been enough.

Just happened to me, too. This has always been an amd64 system, but qdbus:i386 was installed and caused this error, preventing login.

If this happened to a "non-technical" user, they'd be stuck with no way to use their computer.

Same here. Just got stuck with this issue.
C'mon guys, I upgrade to a release 2.5 months later and still get hit by critical issues such as this? Very disappointed...

I can confirm this is still happening.

I can confirm that this is STILL happening. I upgraded from 12.10 to 13.04 today and got that error. Thankfully, I found this bug report, did "apt-get install qdbus:amd64" from command line (Thanks to Bill Pier Post #3!) and had no further issues. I'm running an amd64 system, and always have.

Oh, and getting to the command prompt, mounting / rw, getting the network interface up, yada yada yada was not without it's challenges as well. Any average user would would have thrown up their hands and gone back to Windows (GASP).

Thanks.
