Media key events duplicated or ignored

I loaded rhythmbox by clicking its name in the sound menu, and press my multimedia keyboard play/pause button - this works fine and a song starts playing. Pressing the play/pause button a second time also works as expected, pausing the track.

However, pressing play/pause a third time doesn't start the song again, but either:
 1. does nothing, and the whole rhythmbox interface becomes unresponsive,
 2. starts the song again, but starts another song as well - two songs playing at the same time (or possibly the same song at different positions in the song)
 3. Skips several tracks, before maybe playing one.

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
