Bug Description

I just upgraded my quantal installation on my Lenovo T530 to raring and found the backlight control via fn-keys not functioning properly as it did in quantal.

The backlight is initially set to 100% and can only be reduced to 95%. Setting the value to lower levels, brightness can the be controlled via fn-keys between 95% and 80%, 80% and 20%. The last range is from 20% to 0%. When booting raring with the quantal kernel, brightness can be controlled without issues.

The system is setup with UEFI and only Intel graphics (no hybrid). Clean MBR installation of raring to an external drive shows the same issue.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Benjamin Tegge, as per http://download.lenovo.com/express/ddfm.html an update is available for your BIOS (2.57). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and just provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Thank you for your understanding.

The issue does not occur anymore. It has been fixed, but not completely satisfactory, by a workaround in the kernel to use an older backlight control method than one comparable to Windows 8 which provides a more finegraned control. All in all backlight control support is back to the level of quantal in raring and saucy: functional.

I just tried to install the 2.57 update, but the updater told me that I already have the latest version.

$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
