Bug Description

Today my laptop hang when I tried to shutdown. After 2-3 minutes I had to shutdown it forcefully.
(This problem occured second time.)

There was some error message on screen in red color:
unmounting local filesystem
/etc/init.d, use the service(8)
... will now halt job: S35networking
since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to a start job, you may also use the stop(8) utility, e.g. stop S35networking
Deactivating swap...

Yesterday it hanged when I pressed power button(to sleep) but it didn't go into sleep mode.

Yesterday after shutdown hang, it also took long time to boot.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1173867/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I tried the latest kernel v3.9....
Results:
Put the laptop to sleep, sleep was successful but couldn't wake up. I tried this two times and both time it hanged.
There was no problem during shutdown(tried only once).

So, Ubuntu hangs randomly during shutdown, sleep or resuming.

I'm having the same problem as on http://askubuntu.com/questions/285574/ubuntu-13-04-shutdown-hangs-in-asus-a3500e. Maybe they are related? Mine is an Asrock Vision with an Nvidia card, although I think that doesn't matter. Tried with changing Grub with 'ACPI=OFF' but no luck. Sometimes it works and sometimes the hardware button needs to be pressed to really poweroff the system as it seems to be hanging.

This problem affects me as well, but only when attempting to update to linux-image-3.8.0-21. My system shuts down and sleeps fine on linux-image-3.8.0-19.

Now I have 3.8.0-26 and I don't have any problem with shutdown.

I tried with 3.8.0.26 kernel around 10 times, it works properly. But I remember around 15 days ago (it might be a different kernel), it failed to resume from sleep.
I also tried with latest kernel (3.11.0), it failed to resume in first attempt. I tried again second time same thing happened. It shows a colorful 1inch X 1inch grid on the screen. Its location was different second time.
