Having same problem with facebook xmpp, all contacts are shown offline.
I am not using ubuntu and i have tried pidgin and connecting via ejabberd spectrum transport.
For me, this seems to be a problem with facebook.
This is the only result I found about this topic so I think not everyone has this problem.
Maybe it has to do with facebook account settings.
Did you change any settings in fb? I changed my password recently, but as soon as i can connect to xmpp, the password should not be an issue.

hey, look what i found:

http://wiki.bitlbee.org/HowtoFacebook#I_get_nothing_after_.22Logging_in:_Authenticated.2C_requesting_buddy_list.22

I think this might be what we have…
We can log in but dont receive the buddy list…
I hat a few weeks ago an email from facebook that my account might be hacked - a login from a suspicious location or whatever…
I use a transport server for connecting to facebook xmpp, so facebook only sees the ip of the transport server and thinks it was dangerous because i never logged into the website from that ip!

I am having the same problem. Just grabbed the most recent .deb package from pidgin site and still to no avail my contacts are not showing up on my buddy list. Sometimes if people sign online I will see them when they first sign online, only to immediately sign off within 3 minutes.

Since yesterday, 2013-04-27, it works again for me.
I did not change anything since then.
This is definitely not a bug in pidgin.

Actually it's the same for me either...
It might have been some configuration issue on the side of Facebook.

If you have not chatted with a Facebook contact via Pidgin before, it will appear as -<email address hidden> in your chat list, without profile picture or online status. If the person comes online and you write something, it seems like personal information is exchanged, after which online status, profile picture, and real name (instead of *@chat.facebook.com) appear.

At least that's what's happening for me right now. See attachment for a screenshot this process.
