Compiz keeps crashing

I have intalled a fresh copy of 12.10 and then tried 13.04 but still the same issue. Ive looked online for a fix but have found nothing. Soon as I log in the wallpaper shows up but no unity. Plus when I load firefox via terminal and try and watch a youtube video its shown as an unusual colour and squished on the left hand side of the player.
