Bug Description
Currently node (aka "menu items") management is done by the code inside the GUI. We need to have that move to core API so plugins can create/edit/remove nodes.

Actually no, this is a very specific implementation of how nodes work which everyone wont necessarily agree with. The core needs to be as light as possible where plugin helpers will be used to manage node items as a developer may decide to use another solution. There will be a default plugin available that can be installed called NodeHelper.
The core API wont assume anything, wont dictate anything and will run on as few methods as possible. The rest will be filled in with plugin services.
