Bug Description

It happens sometimes that the system freezes an I can do nothing else than putting the computer off with the physical button.
I can move the mouse but I can't click and the cursor keeps the same appearance.

Often there are little slow-downs when I use the computer and more occasionnaly (now 2 times) it freezes completely.
This problem is relatively new, it can be since the fore-last update of elementaryOS that this happens.

I'm just using Skype and Firefox (with Dropbox in background).

I hope there is a fast solution, because it's really annoying, I can do nothing when the problem appears.

Thank you

This also affects me, it is very annoying. It randomly happens when activating something, like hovering over Plank. 99% of the time my laptop freezes when hovering over Plank, though, so I'm not sure if this is related to Plank or not.

Then it's a duplicate of bug 1140716

This effects me too. My laptop randomly freezes, with the mouse not moving as well. The only resolution out of this situation is powering off with the power button.

I had the same thing happen. I installed kernel 3.11 from the repos (the saucy kernel) and I haven't seen the issue since.

Oddly enough, I only saw the issue when I was running 3.2, 3.8, and 3.9. I ran openSUSE 12.3 on 3.7 for a long time and never had an issue. Then I tried 3.8 in Ubuntu 13.04 and it happened there. Fedora 19 on 3.9, happened there too. Since the 3.10 and up days I haven't seen it again.

That said, I got hit by this bug SO randomly, I'm skeptical to bet 50 dollars on saying that things are 'fixed', but truth be told, I just haven't had a lockup in quite a long time.

I have updated to raring stack for now and issue is gone for me:

sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-raring xserver-xorg-lts-raring

note: saucy xserve stack is not out yet (before 24th Jan, 2014), so if you're reading this after 24th jan, 2014, try this first:

sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-saucy xserver-xorg-lts-saucy

and then restart your computer.
