Bug Description

For about two weeks (I assume one of the driver updates caused the problem), the Intel GPU X driver crashes several times during a session. Several times a day, a hard reboot is necessary since everything but the mouse cursor freezes. It is also not possible to switch to text consoles via Alt-F keys.

It is a particularly severe bug, because it results in system freezes and therefore in data loss. It happens in Gnome 3 Shell and also in Unity. I also cannot associate the Intel GPU driver crash with any particular activity. Sometimes it even crashes without having done anything.

I hope the attached log files will help to find the problem and to fix it. If you need more information, I am more than willing to provide additonal tests.

By the way, over the last week, I also (automatically) sent several apport-gpu error reports. However, I do not know how I can refer to these here, because the system does not give me any error handling number or the like.

I would be very glad if someone could have a look at this bug. Currently, it is almost impossible to do serious work on this computer due these complete crashes. Today, I encountered two of them.

Please find attached some parts of additional log files which I collected after the crashes today. I hope that this helps to find the problem.

X isn't crashing, just unity dies due to a GPU hang. Without an i915_error_state, I'm forced to guess that this is likely the known bug.

Dear Chris, thanks a lot for looking into the bug. I am not using Unity, but Gnome 3. However the same kind of crashes happen if I use unity.

The i915_error_state in /sys/kernel/debug is 0 Bytes, so I cannot send this unfortunately.

What else can I do to help finding the cause?

Dear Chris, I read the comments in bug 1140716 and installed the kernel from comment 177. So far, my system runs fine. Thanks!
I will report under the other bug when I will have more experiences with the changed kernel.
