When I install Ubuntu, the linux distro works out of the box. WLAN, Bluetooth, ATI Display, etc., after a few days suddenly the
Wireless interface is not found on the system., only reiunstalluing helps., ( i tried recompiling madwifi without any luck )

ifconfig shows eth0 and lo only.

Can anyone help me get back wifi without reinstalling wifi.

Is this the lspci and '/proc/version' output with atheros running or after atheros vanished?

I have a similar problem (atheros vanished) but for me it happens after the upgrade to kernel 2.6.20-16-386. So if you have the problem in the same kernel version we could work on this bug together.

Here's a hint, what could have gone wrong when updating to kernel 2.6.20-16:

They say, that it's the missing linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16 that causes atheros to disappear.
I really don't have linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16 installed, but unfortunately I can't find them in Adept.

Solved!

My friend has another model of Acer Laptop with Atheros 5005G WLAN a/b/g Card.

It seems he used to have this often, and he suggested a *SIMPLE* workaround for this.

Switch OFF and back ON the wireless button in the laptop and reboot.

It so appears, the wireless LED is will be burning always regardless of the state of workability.

Note: I'm not switching off the Wireless button Off for this to happen! It all happens randomly. ;-)

Thanks anyways!

By the way: the lspci & /proc/version output is AFTER atheros disappeared! and its a fresh install of 7.04

Congratulations!

In that case, my comments can be ignored as we weren't experiencing the same bug.

I'll open a new bug for my issue when I find the time.

Hi berg

Thanks a lot for filing a 'real' bugreport for my issue ;) Yes, the bug you reported is 100% what I have. I'll when I make further progress I'd report to that bug.

Because I erroneously hijacked this bug(which is about another issue), I think it shouldn't be marked as a duplicate of yours.
