Bug Description

I am running ubuntu raring ringtail 13.04(development branch). With the kernel upgrade, from 3.8.0-17 to 3.8.0-18 I have lost the option of choosing to play the sound through hdmi output, running ubuntu with the previous kernel solves the problem. speaker-test does not work with the hdmi output also.

I have indicated in the box that I think it is more of a kernel problem but it changed to alsa-driver by itself, do not want to do any mess so I will leave it as it is and hope You folk can help.

Your HDMI device usually show up as "HDMI / Displayport 3", right? If so, for speaker-test you should specify

"speaker-test -D hdmi:0,2 -c 2 -t wav "

Will that work, appear to work but give silent output, or give an error message (and if so, what error message)?

It does show up as "HDMI / Displayport 3" when on 3.8.0-17 kernel and the speaker-test works then even without specifing the exact device. I did the speaker-test on the 3.8.0-18 with your exact specs and it gave out this error:

speaker-test 1.0.25

Playback device is hdmi:0,2
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
Playback open error: -19,No such device

I tried with changing hdmi:0,2 with different numbers than 2 but then it is just 'invalid argument'

although through 'aplay -L' I get:
