This borked my desktop. No unity.

I had to uninstall nvidia-310 and kernel 3.8.0-17 then reboot with old kernel. Still no unity.

I reset unity to default reinstall compiz and rebooted to a normal desktop.

This hasn't borked my desktop, but, I know I've had trouble with the NVIDIA 31x series Forceware drivers on my Win 7 partition, too, so, at least it doesn't discriminate *sheepish grin*

Thank you, philinux, I followed your indications and all is now fine. I had to remove the linux-image metapackage: I'll reinstall it at the next kernel update.

Hi philinux,

Can you be more specific in your steps?
I also borked unity.
I fixed the driver by doing apt-get remove nvidia-310 and apt-get install nvidia-current, which installs nvidia-304.
I then see the nvidia logo, but no unity.
Can you explain how you reset unity and reinstall compiz?
If you can post the commands that would be awesome.
thank you

well seems this does the trick:
after above steps, install dconf (i had it already)
apt-get install dconf
then
dconf reset -f /org/compiz/
and
unity --reset-icons
the last action made unity appear for me.
After a reboot all was fine.

I also had similar issues on 12.10, seems unity is a bit sensitive here.
The workaround of using 3.04 is ok for now.
In general these issue caused me a lot of installation issues, which will prevent less tech-savvy users from using Ubuntu!

Actually, I take it back...it didn't bork my desktop UNTIL I rebooted. I tried the dconf and unity reset approach, but ended up having to kill my wubi install...hopefully I'll be back up and running by this morning
