Bug Description

Binary package hint: evince-gtk

Hi. Since evince-gtk conflicts with evince, and ubuntu-desktop depends on evince, installing evince-gtk removes the ubuntu-desktop metapackage. Now I'm not sure if this a bug or not, but the description for ubuntu-desktop recommends not to remove it, so I think ubuntu-desktop should depend on either evince or evince-gtk, especially since evince-gtk shows up as an officially supported package by Canonical.

Thanks.

And precisely because evince-gtk is not supported, ubuntu-desktop should not depend on it :)
xubutu-desktop depends on evince | evince-gtk though.

Changed in evince-gtk:

Then shouldn't this bug be assigned to ubuntu-desktop?

no, evince-gtk is a xubuntu package. If removing ubuntu-desktop is not desirable that evince-gtk should not be installed.

depend on evince so it can be removed, but I do not know the critertia that are used to decide whether a package is depended upon or just recommended (look at the output of apt-cache show ubuntu-desktop)
