Bug Description

I'm using Xubuntu 13.04 beta. Earlier I used 12.10 but the problem was the same. Cardreader doesn't work in Ubuntu though it works in Windows 7.
I think this bug is just like this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/971876
But neither workaround with 'rts_bpp' package in 12.10 nor upgrading upto 13.10 didn't help me.

On 12.10 I have the same problem, the internal card-reader is not working, external USB reader does work. Same type of laptop, ASUS K55VD.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0]. You will need to install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

While no device is being created for the card reader, I do see this in the syslog:

mmc0: error -110 whilst initialising SD card

The same in Kubuntu 13.04 on Asus K55VD.
as in #9, in the syslog "mmc0: error -110 whilst initialising SD card" appears repeated 3 times in a few seconds, when i insert the sd card in the reader.

I am also having this issue on a Sager NP9170 (Clevo p170em).
Additionally I have an old 128MB SD card that I can read on this device.
Upon inserting the card, it mounts automatically.

dmesg also shows the error -110 for me here. 8Gb SD card _and_ 16Gb microSD card in an adaptor that came with the card. It's very strange.

The card reader appears to now be working in the 3.10.0 and later kernels in the Saucy tree! This was tested on a clevo p150em.

Dmitriy Kodanev, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

With new kernel 3.8.0-29-generic my laptop's cardreader now works!
I can see now 'rts8139.ko' file in directory 'kernel/drivers/staging/rts8139'.
Maybe it is the driver I've been needing so long?
I've inserted my SDHC card in the internal cardreader, and dmesg shows:
[34634.137349] mmc0: new high speed SDHC card at address b368
[34634.138406] mmcblk0: mmc0:b368 SD16G 14.7 GiB
