Unity interface freezes very often (i915 video driver)

Hello,

After reinstalling (stock) Ubuntu 12.10 in place of Ubuntu 12.04 on the same hardware, GUI (Unity) interface freezes very often AND the automatic bug collecting tool (apport-gtk) seems to be unable to complete bug reporting (despite commenting the recommended line in the config file, etc.).

Frequent apport dialogs are VERY annoying, effectively blocking work.

The exact piece of hardware is "Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)", PCI ID 8086:0102: http://h-node.org/videocards/view/en/456/Intel-Corporation-2nd-Generation-Core-Processor-Family-Integrated-Graphics-Controller--rev-09-

This is integrated video on a Gigabyte mainboard (common office computer, nothing fancy).

Kernel version is 3.5.0-26-generic (on x86_64 architecture).

xserver-xorg-video-intel version is 2:2.20.9-0ubuntu2

Well there is nothing I can do without those files except point out that most of those issues were resolved in raring.

There is no problem for me to MANUALLY collect the necessary files or logs (without apport).
Please tell me what exact files do you need for debugging (or point me to a piece of documentation that does so).

Start with /var/log/Xorg.0.log after the hang but before rebooting (try switching to a virtual terminal, or remotely logging in). That should mention a GPU hang, and so /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state is the key bit of information for post-mortem debugging.

The computer does not block completely. Only annoying apport messages from time to time, popping out over the current open window (no matter what program is open).
