Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdesktop

After upgrading to KDE 3.5.7 through the kubuntu repository (deb http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-357 feisty main) I no longer have device icons for mounted hard disk volumes on my desktop. This used to work with 3.5.6 that came with feisty. I only have icons for cdroms and removable media, but if I choose not to allow any device icons on desktop these are still showing, so the whole thing about device icons does not work as it should.

I have the same problem. On my system I have 3 hard drives, and the device icons for these do not work as they did in 3.5.6. However, I have found it possible using kwikdisk, and setting up new desktop icons via Create New>Link to Device, to re-establish them plus their 'off-on'functionality. Using the 'atime' flag in /etc/fstab against these drives is also important.

But this is very much a work-around. At boot, the icons do not appear until I use Kwidisk to mount or dismount them.

I can confirm this too. I've enabled/disabled 'show device icons' in Kcontrol -> Desktop -> Behavior -> Device Icons... My windows partition is mounted at /mnt/sda7 but no desktop icon (by default).

I got the same problem with Kubuntu 7.10 and also now with Kubuntu 8.04 Alpha5.

I installed Sidux and had no problems like that but a major problem with the hardware support. Missing w-lan card is is one to much with my Notebook.

Should not be an issue with Kubuntu Intrepid Ibex /KDE 4.1's device notifier/lister.

i can confirm this bug in Kubuntu hardy KDE 3.5.9.
I can't see mounted hard disk icons on desktop eventhough enabled through Configure Kdesktop -> Behavior -> Device Icons->mounted hard disk volume.

However, when i plugin a USB flash drive, i suddenly see all mounted hard disk volumes icons on desktop as well as the USB flash drive icon
