This is a workaround that I applied:
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx* xorg-video- ati xserver- xorg-video- radeon xorg-video- ati xorg.conf. backup
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-
sudo apt-get install xserver-
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/
