Alsa detects modem as a sound card?

Bug Description
I had a problem where I wasn't getting any sound out of Ubuntu. All the mixer
options were OK but there was just no output.
I wondered if this was related to my on-board modem (SiS chipset) which has a
habit of being detected as a mixer device, so I rebooted and disabled it in the
BIOS. On reboot, my sound was working. I wonder if Alsa had detected my modem as
a mixer device and set it to be the default audio device or something like that?
My actual sound card is a SIS SI7012 using the snd_intel8x0 driver. Prior to
dist-upgrading to Hoary, sound was working fine.
I have had a similar bug with Debian Sarge on different hardware, where the
modem was being detected by Alsa as an empty mixer. This didn't cause the sound
to stop working (it just caused mixer apps to crash), but it might have done if
it had been set as the default device. This bug report may be useful:
