Bug Description

This time it when browsing quickly through some pictures using eye of gnome picture viewer. But it happens regularly on several occasions also when using flash or HTLM5 streams. The Session crashes either by freezing compiz/unity or even a complete logout. So filing a bug report immediately is problematic.

G.C. Hassink, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test for this in Raring via http://releases.ubuntu.com/raring/ ?

As well, does following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SensorInstallHowto allow you to monitor your temperature?

This will take some time, since life-CD isn t ready and is probably not
good enough for the test

answer of sudo sensors-detect:
.....
Sorry, no sensors were detected.
This is relatively common on laptops, where thermal management is
handled by ACPI rather than the OS.

I have been testing 13.04 now for a few days.
I got two severe crashes (needed to reboot), i will sort out the details.
If I look at errors related to this bug, xsessions error log of today
give serveral instances of Fatal IO error 11 in different applications
(gtk window manager, nautilus etc) . Please see the attached xsessions log.

All those errors are just symptoms. The real issue seems to be that your GPU locked up, as shown in your Xorg.0.log. Unfortunately, the logs are scant on details as to why that happened...

At this point, if you are still using Ubuntu 12.04, either add the Oibaf PPA or upgrade to the Raring Enablement Stack.

Raring LTS Enablement Stack:
sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-raring xserver-xorg-lts-raring libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-raring

Oibaf PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade -y; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y

Seems oibaf will soon stop supporting Ubuntu 12.04, so it would be best to go the LTS Enablement Stack route only.

G. C. Hassink, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-ati REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi, I've got the same problem on an ATI card. I tried running apport-collect, it wouldn't let me submit my report because I didn't create the bug. I'm willing to take over reporting and testing it.

James Lownie, thank you for your comment. So your hardware and problem may be tracked, could you please file a new report by executing the following in a terminal:
ubuntu-bug xorg

Please ensure you have xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information.

For more on this, please see the official Ubuntu documentation:
Ubuntu X.Org Team, Ubuntu Bug Control, and Ubuntu Bug Squad: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/BestPractices#X.2BAC8-Reporting.Focus_on_One_Issue
Ubuntu Community: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette

When opening up the new report, please feel free to subscribe me to it.

Please note, not filing a new report will delay your problem being addressed as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your understanding.
