Bug Description

My Ubuntu box starts GDM at 1024x768. But my lousy monitor will give only 60Hz
there, so I've changed my resolution in Gnome to 800x600 and got 85Hz. I haven't
notice nothing for quite long time, because I normally halt machine after I have
finished my work. But today I wanted to logout, and to my surprise GDM login
screen popedup in 800x600. You could see login box, but all buttons on the
bottom of the screen was gone. Shoundn't GDM back to orginal size? :-)

probably not a gdm issue, gdm doesn't set the resolution. Could you attach your
/var/log/XFree86.0.log and your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
(if you use warty, or the xorg equivalents if you use hoary) ?

Maybe. It's my first time with GDM, so I couldn't tell if it's him in 100%.

I'm on Warty. I'll attache it.

My XFConfig

As requested, here's my XFConfig-4 from Ubuntu. Hope that helps.

could you provide the log too (/var/log/XFree86.0.log) ?

Ok, there is a bug upstream about this. Not sure if that's a gdm or xfree issue...

Daniel, any idea on this ?

I assume that what gdm does is, instead of spawning a new X server, it reuses
the old one if possible. This means that the resolution may have changed under
it, so it should both listen for XRANDR events while it's running, and
double-check the dimensions just before it starts the greeter. Of course, if
you're spawning a new X server, that's a really bizzarely weird bug, but I
assume it's just reusing the existing one.

I think that I experince the same bug - now and then it happens that log-in
screen wakes up in 640x480, and then even all ubuntu starts in this resolution.

In normal situation, I have 1920x1200 on start sceen and 1024x768 in ubuntu.

Restarting Ubuntu helps.

Is this the same bug, or I should file a new one?
