GRUB error 2 - UGH !!

Bug Description

My config is similar to that reported in bug # 27596 (dual boot & dual HD). The install of 6.06 from CD provided with book "Ubuntu Linux for Non-Geeks" completed normally. However frequently but not consistently during re-boot the GRUB loading err 2 (during phase 1.5) occurs. Sometimes it results from VIEWING ONLY the HD partitions using Win/XP SP2 'Disk Manager' but also occurs after normal shutdown.

The only recovery is to RE-INSTALL Ubuntu after which both OSes boot & run properly.

Plz advise this NEWBIE (who is getting very good at installing 6.06 but would like to learn more).

Thanx.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

Hi Brian: the latest Ubuntu (7.04) has been recently installed-so far so good: NO GRUB ERROR 2 !

However since the config is dual-boot (Ubuntu & Win XP) and since Win XP requires frequent S-L-O-W re-booting can the initial OS selection screen be changed so that Win appears on TOP (instead of last choice) ? If so, i can request re-boot in Win & walk away for a cup of coffee knowing that Win will launch instead of Ubuntu (default if no operator present). Thanx

Hello,

I am closing this bug report because the original problem has been resolved. You can adjust the default operating system to boot by pressing F2 and running "gksu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst" and adjusting the number that comes after "default".
